The next six master studies, I forgot to upload them yesterday. They went much better than my first acrylic attempt! There’s a lot I could improve on, but for the exercise we’re doing I’m learning so much about composition and values that I never realised before when just looking at these paintings. Now to carry on with the rest!

“We tend to think animals are lower than us, but all the scientists in the world couldn’t design and operate a bumblebee’s wing. We can’t jump or run very fast, and we can’t carry vast weights like an ant can. We can’t see in the dark and we can’t fly except crammed in a noisy tube like sardines, which doesn’t count. Humans compared to animals are almost totally deaf, and we can’t smell a fart in an elevator by their standards. We are finite and separate, and neurotic, while the consciousness of an animal is at peace and eternal. We strive and go crazy to become more important. Animals rest and sleep and enjoy the company of each other. We think we have evolved upwards from animals but we have lost almost all of their qualities and abilities. The idea that animals don’t have consciousness or that they don’t have a soul is rather crass. It shows a lack of consciousness. They talk, they have families, they feel things, they act individually or together to solve problems, they often care of their young as a tribal unit. They play, they travel, and medicate themselves when they get sick. They cry when others in the herd die, they know about us humans. Of course they have a soul, a very pristine one. We humans are only now attempting with the recent rise in consciousness to achieve the soul that animals have naturally.”

Seeing the great results people were having with paint made me try the acrylics again for the studies… much better results! I’m still painfully slow, with each taking around half an hour so I’m not sure if I’ll get 50 done, as well as 50 colour studies and 3 full master studies… but as long as I’m learning and working hard it’s ok. Quality over quantity!

Nigel Farage is facing fresh embarrassment over a Ukip supporter after it emerged that one of the party’s most generous donors believes that women are guilty of “hostile behaviour” by “deliberately” wearing trousers to make themselves unattractive to men.

Demetri Marchessini, a Greek-born shipping tycoon who gave Ukip £10,000 this year, made the comments in a coffee table book that features photographs of women from behind.

The millionaire teamed up with a photographer a decade ago to find “unattractive backsides”, in the words of the Observer writer Liz Hoggard, on the streets of London and New York.

Marchessini wrote in Women in Trousers: A Rear View: “I adore women and want to see them looking beautiful. Everyone has the obligation to look as attractive as possible. It pains me to see women looking terrible.

“Walk along any street and you see women using trousers like a uniform every single day. This is hostile behaviour. They are deliberately dressing in a way that is opposite to what men would like. It is behaviour that flies against common sense, and also flies against the normal human desire to please.”

Ahh, some people on the course have done some really great master studies in acrylics, and I’m wondering if I should attempt it again myself. Now I have a better idea of how to go about it, the results may be better and it’d save my hand/wrist as I’m having to press on really hard to get the dark value with graphite - that’s with using a 9B graphite stick!

Ok, I’m being brave, here are my first five master studies. At the moment we’re using three values (or as close as I can get to that) to block in the basic shapes and composition of each piece. I’ve written what painting I studied for each one. I have to do 50 of these as the first part of the art camp assignment, then 50 colour studies which will be even more difficult as I have no real knowledge of colour at all! I’m happiest with either the first Monet or Whistler study, I feel the others are a bit messy but are a good start.

Well that’s the first six master studies done… I can really see where working digitally...

Well that’s the first six master studies done… I can really see where working digitally could make this process slightly easier. I tried first in acrylic, bearing in mind we’re currently doing three-value studies. So black, grey and white. My god, what a nightmare. The paint mixed where I didn’t want it to, blobs of paint higher up the bristles blobbed onto the page in places it shouldn’t have gone… I only did the one acrylic piece. The next five I’ve done in graphite, I think I’ll upload them here, might as well seeming as it’s my personal art blog? It’s a real challenge, never done them before, but it’s getting easier and I’m having more fun doing them too!

I’m really excited now, the first week of the online art course I signed up to started today!...

Didn’t take long for me to mess up my sleeping pattern… just getting into bed at 3:50am. I’m too old to pull all nighters successfully now, so the only way to stop is to force myself up at a decent time. This is hard, as I love sleep a lot.

Well I’ve just found out somebody I’ve known since primary school has died. He’d only turned 16 in March. It’s strange that I haven’t spoken to him in so long, yet here I am with the news affecting me so much. A complete shock. I have no idea how his family must be feeling, and his twin sister.

I believe “fhyyjfdgjreu” or similar is perfect right now. I just found the most horrible spider in my bed, while I was in it. Now I have to somehow sleep in it…

Time to search every inch of my bed in case there’s more, even that won’t help much. My skin is crawling and I want to cry.
