I don’t ever remember posting these? I guess I should put them here now, I haven’t posted any of my own work since December last year! I actually created these pieces a while ago now, back in September when I started the first semester. I used graphite, ink, watercolours, chalk and markers to create these pieces.

Life Lines, by Ross Loveday.
“A landscape, yes, but this is no Constable. There are no idyllic rolling hills; no bountiful harvests; no fields of luscious green grass. This is the malevolent face of Mother Nature. Printmaker Ross Loveday hones in on neglected features of the landscape and brings them to the fore. Using sharp metal tools he carves directly into the printing plate, achieving this violent, scratchy effect. Later he applies carborundum, a compound of silicon and carbon, giving the black areas their rich velvety texture.” Originally from Artfinder.
This is what I was working on while testing out my easel. Although I’m not happy with this piece, it did give me some progress on how to improve the ideas I had in my head which is always great. I used ink, watercolours and marker pens for this piece.
This isn’t finished yet, but I’m still not sure what is missing so maybe posting it here might help me think of something. This piece was about experimentation with the inks and watercolours, and an attempt to bring in some of my influences with the way I use the ink which I think was successful. Now I just need to figure out what’s missing!
My sketches from today, I spent around 5 minutes on each (approximately). Speed sketching can be quite fun! I used pencil and ink.

Look what arrived today! I can’t wait to start using this sketchbook now, and it came with lots of extras and prints. Thanks! You can see Jon Carling’s work here.
Work in progress… I’m not sure exactly what I want to do with this piece now, so I’m going to leave it and come back to it later with some ideas (hopefully!). There is some self-doubt setting in at the moment, but I’m trying to ignore the voice telling me I’m not good enough or that my ideas aren’t good enough by making more art!
I said I would start working… and so I have! I decided to draw the orchid flowers in my room before all of them die, and they are beautiful flowers. It also starts the ‘theme’ that i want to work on with my artwork, well it’s more the subject than a theme I guess. Either way, I want to look at flowers and trees, and continue my inspiration and ideas that I’ve gotten from completing my foundation year. I used pen, markers and ink on paper.

A large scale piece inspired by the knots and textures found in tree bark, I tried a more ‘spontaneous’ approach with this. Drawing ink and white chalk on brown packaging paper.

This piece was intended to be my own interpretation and study of one of Egon Schiele’s works, The Scornful Woman, 1910. Looking through a book of his works this one caught my eye. There is a lot I could do to improve it, but the aim was to create a quick study and I don’t think it’s too bad considering I’ve never painted the human figure or skin before. I used acrylic paints on paper.

My final major project outcomes. I created two large scale ink drawings based on The Divine Comedy: Hell, Circle 7, the Forest of Suicides; I wanted to explore my own interpretation of the trees, as this was one of the scenes that impacted me the most. They are both approximately 1.5m by 2.4m.
Not foliage green, but of a dusky colour,
Not branches smooth, but gnarled and intertangled,
Not apple-trees were there, but thorns with poison. The Divine Comedy: Hell, Canto XIIIby Dante Alighieri
